Ford and Cosworth working together
The Cosworth Ford engine partnership began when Cosworth started manufacturing racing engines in 1959, back then the 1,000cc Kent engine block was used in Formula Junior and had come out of the new Ford Anglia road car. The Cortina engine block was used as the basis of the next two joint projects, the FVA and the DFV, both of which came about from Colin Chapman's persuading tones in Ford bankrolling Keith Duckworth's new design for a 3,000cc Formula One engine. The contract stipulated that the FVA engine, used in Formula Two, was built as a proof of concept and used as the basis of design for the DFV. This engine was a success and won 167 races over a roll of twenty years. Modified to be used in lots of other racing categories, the DFV put Cosworth Engineering and it's engines at the forefront of motorsport technology.
In 1969 the Ford Cosworth partnership was further strengthened by building DOHC engine for road use in the new Ford Escort, the DBA engine was born and put to it's greatest use in Group B rallying in the RS200. The more memorable engine that has powered both ordinary folk and racing champions is the YB, originally introduced in theĀ Ford Sierra RS Cosworth in 1986 with 204Bhp. Based on the venerable Pinto block the racing version of this engine could produce about 400Bhp. In the next iteration the YBB was capable of 550Bhp and helped Ford win the World Touring Car constructors championship at the first time of asking. When Ford were retiring the RS500 they needed another car to take it's place and with the YBT engine they created the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Based on the Sierra floor plan they produced a car that was amazingly customisable. With only 204Bhp in standard road going trim, it can be chopped and changed at engine level to create a snarling 800Bhp monster. No wonder that this magnificent machine went on to achieve rally greatness in Group A.

From the humble sierra hatchback, in it's many guises, came possibly the most well regarded of all the RS Cosworth cars, the Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth. Built with a saloon styling rather than a hatchback, it was one of the best Cossies ever produced. From the 302 to the 304, the standard to the special Rouse editions of both the two wheel and four wheel drive variants. These cars are well cared and sought after by owners and fans alike.
It achieved it's greatest success on the race track at the hands of Andy Rouse in the British Touring Car Championship in the eighties and nineties. Following on from this and the arrival of the Mondeo, it was last sold in 1993.
